EWB-USA West Coast Chapter Relations Manager

Elizabeth Clark
As a Chapter Relations Manager, Elizabeth builds and maintains relationships between EWB-USA and its members, partners and Non-Governmental Organizations. She also provides support and education to chapters in development, establishment, networking, and the project process.  Elizabeth began her experience in international development as a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Mongolia. She then went on to earn her graduate degree in International Development with an emphasis on development planning and sustainability. She has worked in volunteer training, engagement, and management in Nepal and domestically during several disaster recovery efforts.

Pearl Abarca

Pearl received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Irvine.  She has over 15 years of working experience in commercial, residential and public works projects; with a strong background in water resources and stormwater quality protection. 

Pearl started her involvement in EWB-USA in 2008 when she helped start the EWB-USA Orange County Professional chapter. She served as president of the EWB-USA OC Professionals in its first year and worked on a water distribution project for 3 communities in El Salvador. She joined the EWB-USA West Coast Region Steering Committee as the Southern California State Representative in 2010. Pearl served as a State Representative for 2 years, Vice-President in 2012 and currently served most recently as president of the EWB-USA West Coast Region.

Jonathan Lim

Jonathan is currently finishing up his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles.  During the 2012-2013 school year he was elected to be President of Engineers Without Borders-UCLA and under his leadership, the UCLA chapter received the Champion Award at the 2012 West Coast Regional Conference.  He still remains committed to the Engineers Without Borders-UCLA chapter and currently holds the Senior Advisor position for his chapter.  He also is active in other extracurricular activities at UCLA, as he is the Conference Coordinator for American Society of Civil Engineers and was President of his Floor Government for two years.  Marked by his ambition, Jonathan is willing to take up any challenge that is before him.

Patrick Coyle

Pat is a registered Mechanical and Professional Engineer, and a certified Project Management Professional, retired from a 32 year career as a project engineer and program manager at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Pat has been a member of EWB-USA/EWB-SFP since 2005. He serves on the West Coast and Domestic TAC, as ARC Team Leader, on the EWB-USA Service Corps and as Co-Lead for the EWB-SFP Appropriate Technology Design Team (ATDT).  He’s attended several EWB-USA Regional and International Conferences and presented workshops and poster sessions on Simple, Inexpensive Aerial Photography Mapping with Balloons or Kites. In the 1970s, Pat worked as Field Engineer and Operations Manager for development of a 24,000-acre property as cattle ranch, in Belize, Central America. In 2006, he founded Belize Open Source - Sustainable Development (BOSSD), a 501(c)(3) non-profit that promotes environmentally and socially sustainable development on a land-based learning and community outreach center and working farm in northwestern Belize, near the village of August Pine Ridge. BOSSD partners with EWB-USA and have fundraised and provided funds to support four EWB-USA chapters working in northern Belize. As the NGO, worked with the August Pine Ridge village council to prepare an EWB project application for the August Pine Ridge - Community Improvement Program. Resulted in EWB-Cleveland State and the community completion of a new hurricane shelter/classroom building in August Pine Ridge.

Courtney Boyle

Courtney served as Membership Coordinator of the EWB-USA Orange County chapter, where she participated in Kenya Water Supply program for preliminary design for rainwater catchment and traveled for assessment trip performed water quality analysis at multiple sites, oversaw and organized survey, and performed community surveys. She served as President of Puget Sound Professionals, where she was instrumental in maintaining membership engagement, reaching out to student chapters, providing an environment that helped foster Programs growth and fundraising success, and facilitating a clean transfer of chapter operations to a new batch of committed volunteer leaders, including new president and the existing Executive Committee. She has extensive experience with EWB’s history, policies and procedures. She also works with EWB-USA as a Brown and Caldwell representative on a national level.

VP of External Affairs

Imaan Taghavi


Coming in to college at UC Davis, Imaan had a desire to do great things during his undergraduate education. When he heard about Engineers Without Borders, he realized this was his calling: an opportunity to be a part of something that would help him give back to others and grow himself as a person. Since joining, he has been the Undergraduate Liaison for the chapter, President for Spring of 2013, and the lead for a new (pending) Nicaragua Program for. Now he brings his passion to the West Coast Region as Vice President of External Affairs, where he hopes to create stronger connections between chapters in the Region.

Kim Prisock
Kim has served as the secretary for the West Coast Region Steering Committee since 2010. She joined EWB-USA in 2005 and has served as an officer at both the collegiate and professional level. She served as secretary for the Gonzaga chapter in 2005 and helped establish the Inland Northwest Professional Chapter in 2007. She graduated from Gonzaga University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. She worked on the W.A.T.E.R. Program while at Gonzaga, including design and research using Filtróns, a ceramic water filter, and activated carbon for point-of-use water treatment in Porto Novo, Benin.

Kim is a licensed civil engineer in the State of Washington. She currently works as an Environmental Engineer in the Water Quality program for the Washington State Department of Ecology. Kim also serves as the Mentor Database Coordinator for the West Coast Region.

Dan Clark

Dan received his B.S. in civil engineering from Cal Poly, Pomona and is a licensed engineer in the state of California. He has 5 years of experience working in private practice of land development improvement design and surveying and 25 years of experience in public works for the cities of Carlsbad, Murrieta, and El Cerrito. His favorite job has been working as State Highway Engineer and Public Division Manager for the American Trust Territory of American Samoa. Dan’s talents have also manifested through his paper, Growth Management Techniques for the City of Carlsbad, California which was published in the ASCE Journal of Urban Planning and Development.

Dan is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Public Works Association. He is a Correspondence Member for the LEED-ND local government advisory group as a part of the UC Green Building Council. He is also a past president of the EWB-USA Sacramento Valley Professional Chapter and has been the West Coast Region Treasurer since 2009. His claim to fame though is that he competed in the Coca Cola International Windsurfing Competition in Perth, Australia.

           Chad Norvell 

Chad joined EWB in 2008 at Portland State University. While earning his civil engineering degree, he served as chapter president for two years and traveled on five trips to Central America to direct community projects in potable water and flood mitigation. Chad served as the West Coast Region president in 2012 and currently serves as past-president of EWB’s West Coast Region. In 2012, Chad was awarded the EWB Founders’ Award for exemplifying the mission and vision of EWB-USA. Chad currently works as the lead engineer and designer for WorldHaus, Inc., a social enterprise bringing safe, desirable, and affordable housing to half a billion people in India.
Oregon State Rep.

Rachael J. Shea
Rachael joined EWB in 2007 while attending the University of Florida. She served in various roles including chapter president, and she worked with state chapters and EWB-USA for a year as the Florida State Representative. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in Environmental Engineering and moved to Portland, Oregon to work in Intel’s Environmental, Health and Safety group. Her experience is mainly in solid and hazardous waste-related projects.

 Washington State Rep

Patrick Cummings

Patrick is a consulting Professional Engineer, Civil, Environmental, and Water Resources, with a BS from Seattle University. At EWB Seattle University, he developed, managed and completed waste water, drinking water, bridge, and retaining wall projects in Nicaragua, Thailand, and Jamaica. At Puget Sound Professionals, he serves as Nicaragua program manager responsible for all aspects of Matagalpa ecological coffee processing facility. He is the professional traveling mentor for the UW student chapter’s ongoing Guatemala Fish Hatchery and community center construction project. He does outreach to other groups, give talks to students, pairs them up with mentors, and travels as professional mentor. Has EWB project experience in five different countries with students over the last eight years, in different capacities, ranging from cultural liaison and interpreter to professional technical mentor.

Alaska State Rep.

Chase Nelson 

Chase Nelson, PE, is the State of Alaska representative to the Western Region Steering Committee. Alaska has two EWB chapters, the South Central Alaska Professional Chapter and the University of Alaska Anchorage Student Chapter. 
As a professional, Chase works out of Fairbanks, Alaska for DOWL HKM.  He regularly works in Alaska's remote villages.  Chase has volunteered for Engineers Without Borders and other service oriented non-governmental organizations since 2005.  As a student, at Michigan Technological University, Chase was active in the student chapter of EWB.  Upon graduation in 2007, Chase went to Central America and to Haiti to work for Appropriate Infrastructure Development Group.  While with AIDG Chase worked on the development of locally appropriate biogas systems and solar water heating systems, while helping with the incubation of small businesses.  He worked there, until beginning his professional career with DOWL HKM.

Mike Ward

Michael Ward joined Engineers Without Borders in 2012 at the Cal Poly SLO student chapter. Michael served as Vice President for the SLO chapter for the 2013-2014 school year. While at Cal Poly, he traveled with the India project team to Northern India and worked on a sanitation system. Michael is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Environmental Engineering at Cal Poly SLO and he expects to graduate in 2015.

        Hawaii State Rep.

Wesley Wong

 Born and raised on Oahu and a graduate of Cal Poly Pomona, Wesley presently serves as the Hawaii State Representative for the EWB West Coast Region.  He attained a B.S. in civil engineering and a Hawaii professional engineering license, and is a past president of the EWB Honolulu Professional Chapter (aka EWB-Aloha Chapter).  The EWB-Aloha chapter’s active projects are an irrigation/water improvement project in northern Thailand and a recycled tire-retainaing wall project for the Honolulu Board of Water Supply’s Xeriscape Garden.
Wesley is currently working on a sustainable development in Savaii, Samoa.  He is also working towards growing his newly established business, Laulea Engineering LLC, which focuses on wastewater management and engineering consulting.  His business and personal goals include sustainability and a focus on the environment.

Water Testing Kit Coordinator
Chris Barr
Chris has been involved in the San Diego Professional Chapter since its inception in 2005. He has served as the West Region Steering Committee Vice President and supports the Region Water Quality Test Kit with recommendations for water testing approaches on projects throughout the Region. Chris is the Rotary Club speaker for the EWB-USA San Diego, reaching out to Clubs on EWB-USA projects. Chris is currently assisting EWB-USA to further develop relationships with non-governmental organizations looking for engineering and consulting assistance on water and sanitation projects.

Chris has over 25 years of experience in water analysis, with extensive experience in field sampling and analysis programs. His technical background also includes human and ecological risk assessment. He is currently managing quality and environmental management systems for a multinational engineering consulting firm. He received his BA in Chemistry from California State College, San Bernardino and is ASQ Certified Quality Auditor & Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence
